Kiss Me, Liar - Chapter 157
Keith clenched his fists on the desk. His knuckles were white, and his fist mildly quivered. He was incredibly enraged right now. He might hit me. As proof of that, he subconsciously leaked out heavy pheromones. My self-hatred helped me to hold onto my reason and stopped myself from getting intoxicated by the sweet scent.
Keith unclenched his fists. Instead of hitting me, he picked up my check. The paper was shredded to pieces. I had already expected that, so I wasn’t surprised. Besides, I didn’t have twenty thousand dollars in my bank account anyway.
Keith leered at me as he ripped the check to pieces. I watched impassively as the pieces of the check floated to the floor.
Keith raised both his hands, challenging me for my next move.
Of course, my answer was predetermined.
I picked up the watch that was lying on the desk. Then, I threw it in the trash in front of Keith’s face.
Thunk. It made a dull sound, and a cold silence ensued. Keith didn’t say anything. I said, standing straight, “Then, it’s settled. I will take my leave now.”
I briefly bade him farewell and left the office. As expected, Keith didn’t stop me this time.
As soon as I got out, I called the secretary’s office right away. I let them know what to do and then sent a brief email with the details of the partner Keith chose. Now, someone else would pick out and present her with jewelry. At least I didn’t have to break the bad news to her once their relationship was over.
‘Would they have to choose the jewelry to give to me?’ I thought sarcastically, then I returned to my poker face and started work.
I had cleaned out the room that I had been using in the morning. While I spent time there, my belongings had increased, but I left most of the items that Keith had bought me. The only thing that I brought from my house was my briefcase and one suit. I set my items to one side so they would be easy to get rid of.
The only thing that I decided to take from that house were inhibitors. I took out the pain relief medication and inhibitors from the medicine cabinet in the bathroom. I resisted the urge to shake out all the contents of the bottle into my mouth and only shook out the maximum allowed daily dosage in my palm. I swallowed it down with the analgesic and sat on the bed to wait for the effects to kick in.
It was clear why my head was especially numb and why my body was more sluggish than usual. Damn pheromones. I would do anything if I could go back to being a beta. I suddenly remembered Dr. Stuart. Was he doing those kinds of experiments?
I thought Keith was special, but that was my delusion. I was blinded by love and interpreted everything however I wanted to. He was no different from other Extreme Alphas.
The sun rose as I leaned my head against the wall and stared blankly out the window. I needed to go to work.
I wanted to quit right away, but the reality was harsh. I had a debt to repay and two younger sisters. I needed to finance their post-secondary education, and by the time they were to get married, as the eldest child and their older brother, I needed to fund a significant portion of their wedding.
If I became jobless right away, I needed to extend my visa until I found my next workplace, which also posed a problem. Yet, I wasn’t confident in my ability to return to Korea to look for work. The best I could do was continue working while finding a different job, but it wasn’t easy to find employment that could match my current pay and working conditions. Plus, the fact that I was a resident alien restricted my options even more.
